Description:
A truth terrible enough to bury for a millennium …

A mysterious boy calling in her sleep …

A secret city that shouldn’t exist …

When Eila Doyle first sees the strange boy beckoning in whispers from somewhere deep in her imagination, she questioned her sanity. She was used to seeing strange things with her eyes closed — that’s what Eila did all day while strapped to the Blunderbuss, Building whatever the Ministry of Manifestation required — but never before have those images felt so real, or so dangerous.

After Eila learns the terrible truth about her reality and the monsters inside it, she thinks that maybe madness might be her only escape...

This thrilling young adult steampunk adventure is the first in the Dream Engine series by masters of story Platt & Truant, authors of The Beam, Unicorn Western, and many more.

Review:
My favorite thing about this story was how original it was. A world where dreams are stolen from the people only to be given back in the form of inventions some people are trained to bring into life, and all set in a Steampunk background. I really enjoy the innate creativity of Steampunk worlds, so even though the whole steam and clockwork thing took more of a backseat, I still loved how this plot was set in that sort of world. This is just made all the more impressive to me since the whole book from conception to final draft was all written in just one month! To come up with such an interesting storyline and execute it under such a time constraint is incredibly impressive.

One thing that did detract from my enjoyment a bit was that there was a lot more telling than showing. This lead to quite a bit of info-dumping at some parts but also parts where things that seemed like they needed more description were left vague. Also, at times I felt there were stretches where the plot would not advance for a while and then leap forward in bursts that seemed a bit hurried in contrast.

Overall though, I thought this was a very entertaining story. The world pulled me in and made me want to know more. I would especially recommend this book to fans of Young Adult Literature and Steampunk.
